“DUI checkpoints like this one are placed in locations based on collision statistics and frequency of DUI arrests,” stated the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department. “Deputies will be looking for signs of alcohol and/or drug impairment, with deputies checking drivers for proper licensing.”

The Sheriff’s Department also warned drivers that DUI isn’t strictly related to alcohol consumption; it also applies to drug use.

Authorities are encouraging locals to take the following precautions to prevent DUIs:

  • Always use a designated sober driver such as a friend who is not drinking, ride-share, cab or public transportation to get home.

  • If you see someone who is clearly impaired try to drive, take the keys and help them make other arrangements to find a sober way home.

  • Report drunk drivers by calling 911.

  • If hosting a party, also offer non-alcoholic drinks. Monitor who is drinking and how they are getting home.

Drivers charged with a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license, warned the Sheriff’s Department.
