Driver rescued from overturned 18-wheeler in Central

CENTRAL, La (BRPROUD) — Multiple officials worked for several hours to rescue a driver that was trapped inside of the cab of an overturned tanker truck.

The crash took place at Hooper Road between Devall and Greenwell Springs Road in Central. The 18-wheeler took down power lines and power poles, according to the Central Fire Department.

CFD responded to the crash just before 7:30 p.m. Friday. According to CFD, multiple crews were working for around three hours to free the driver.

“This would turn out to be the longest and most complex rescue operation in decades,” said CFD in a Facebook post.

The driver of the overturned 18-wheeler did not suffer any serious injuries, according to the Central Police Department. East Baton Rouge Parish EMS and Acadian Air Med responded to assist in patient care and transport, according to CFD.

All five Central Fire Stations, St. George Fire Department Squad 605 and their special operations command staff, Zachary Fire Department, Baton Rouge Fire Department, Central Police Department, East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office, East Baton Rouge Parish EMS, Acadian Air Med, RoadRunner Towing & Recovery, Inc. wrecker service and Entergy responded during the incident.

“I would like to thank our great Central Fire Department, East Baton Rouge Parish EMS and the St. George Fire Department. Thank you, Mayor Wade Evans who came out and remained on scene for several hours to make sure the fire department and police department had everything that was needed,” said CPD in a Facebook post.
