Driver charged with hit-and-run after boy struck by Rohnert Park school

(KRON) — A Mustang driver is facing a slew of charges after he allegedly crashed into a scooter rider near a Rohnert Park school and fled.

Police said Angel Antonio Martinez, 22, of Cotati, was driving a white Ford Mustang when it crashed into a boy who was riding a scooter in a light up crosswalk at 8:30 a.m. on May 3.

Several witnesses called 911 reporting the hit-and-run collision on Snyder Lane by Rancho Cotate High School. The boy suffered non-life-threatening injuries and his scooter was snapped in half.

“Witnesses reported a white mustang striking a pedestrian on a scooter in the crosswalk and fleeing the scene. Thanks to the quick response of our officers and firefighters, the juvenile victim was located and attended to promptly. Several witnesses, including one who captured the suspect vehicle on video, assisted our law enforcement in tracking down the perpetrator,” police wrote.

Sonoma County prosecutors charged Martinez with reckless driving, hit-and-run resulting in injury, and child endangerment. He is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday to enter a plea.

This week, the Rohnert Park Department of Public Safety issued a community safety message for people riding scooters. RPDPS wrote, “Please prioritize safety when crossing roads or riding scooters. We urge pedestrians and scooter riders to ensure vehicles come to a complete stop before entering the crosswalk. Wear helmets on bikes or scooters. Remember, safety is everyone’s responsibility.”
