Some Dr. Phillips Center expansion plans indefinitely on hold

The Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts can’t build its $175 million third phase until Orange County and the city of Orlando provide most of the funding, said arts center President and CEO Katherine Ramsberger. The center cannot raise that much money by itself, she added.

Phase three would add more indoor and outdoor entertainment and food venues.

The arts center last year asked for $145 million in Orange County tourist development tax funds for the expansion: $54 million for initial work and the remaining $91 million later. The remaining $30 million needed for the project would come from the city and fundraising by the arts center.

Microsoft and OpenAI have announced a $2 million fund to combat the growing risks of AI and deepfakes being used to "deceive the voters and undermine democracy." This year will see a record 2 billion people head to the polls in elections spanning some 50 countries, so there are concerns around the influence that AI will have among voters — particularly those in "vulnerable communities" that may be more susceptible to take what they see at face value. The rise of generative AI, including wildly popular chatbots such as ChatGPT, has led to a major new threat landscape involving AI-generated "deepfakes" designed to perpetuate disinformation.

Akamai confirms acquisition of Noname for $450M
A couple of weeks ago, TechCrunch broke the news that Akamai was in discussions to acquire Noname Security, a specialist in API security, for around $500 million. Akamai on Tuesday said it has agreed to buy Noname in a $450 million deal. Noname was valued at $1 billion at its last private fundraise in December 2021, so it is selling for less than half that price tag.

Daloopa trains AI to automate financial analysts' workflows
Thomas Li was working at Point72, the hedge fund founded by notorious investor Steve Cohen, when he realized that the financial industry relies heavily on manual data entry processes that could be prone to errors. "As a buy-side analyst, I felt the pain of manually sourcing and entering data to build and update financial models," Li told TechCrunch. After meeting Jeremy Huang, a former software engineer at Airbnb and Meta, and Daniel Chen, an ex-Microsoft engineer, through New York University connections (all three are all alums), Li decided to try his hand at an automated solution to the data entry challenges.
