DoorDash offers insight of Denver customers using SNAP for deliveries

DENVER (KDVR) — Over 1.1 million people have added their Supplemental Nutrition Assistance/Electronic Benefit Transfer cards to their DoorDash accounts since the cards were first supported on the platform in 2023, the company announced Tuesday.

Many of the purchases made with those cards in Denver have gone to low-income communities or food deserts, the company reported.

Since supporting the use of SNAP/EBT cards on the app, DoorDash has determined that many deliveries using that payment method have gone to communities of color, residents living in food deserts and low-income communities. According to DoorDash, the app connects residents with essential goods and improves access to food.

In Denver during 2023, DoorDash completed SNAP deliveries to thousands of consumers. Of these:

  • 37% went to communities of color;

  • 13% went to residents living in food deserts; and

  • 39% went to consumers living in low-income communities

To help these customers stretch those benefits further, DoorDash is supporting orders to a dozen additional grocery stores, including Sprouts Farmers Market, ACME Markets, Food City, Hy-Vee, Shaw’s, Kings Food Markets, Jewel-Osco, Pavilions, Randalls, Star Market, Stater Bros. Markets, Tom Thumb and Vons.

Nationally, DoorDash reported that:

  • More than 1 in 6 SNAP deliveries on DoorDash are made to consumers living in food deserts;

  • 49% of DoorDash SNAP deliveries are made to consumers living in low-income communities;

  • 28% of SNAP deliveries on DoorDash are to consumers living in census tracts with a higher rate of seniors than the national average (16%); and

  • 47% of SNAP deliveries on DoorDash have been made to consumers living in census tracts with higher rates of people with disabilities than the national average (12.7%)
