Door knock from neighbor, police officer rescues family from Woodbridge house fire

WOODBRIDGE, Va. (DC News Now) — A family was able to safely get out of their home that caught on fire after their neighbor and a Prince William County police officer woke them up and got them out.

Early Monday morning at around 4:15 a.m., Prince William County Fire and Rescue System (PWCFRS) crews responded to a house fire in the 15500 block of Merrily Way.

There, firefighters saw “heavy fire and smoke” towards the back of the single-family home. Crews were able to get the fire under control.

PWCFRS said a neighbor saw the fire and tried to wake up the family by using a car horn. Then a police officer came and started knocking “feverishly” on the front door of the family’s home, waking them up. The officer helped them get out before firefighters arrived.

The home’s structure had “moderate damage.” It was determined to be unsafe to live in, displacing two adults and one child, according to PWCFRS.

The Fire Marshal’s Office said the fire started outside and spread into the home. The fire was ignited by “smoking materials” that weren’t disposed of correctly.
