Don’t Panic: Bee swarms are not hostile

MANHATTAN (KSNT) – April showers bring May flowers. And this stretch brings bee swarms to the Sunflower State.

Each year, Kansas experiences what’s known as “swarm season” from April to June. It’s triggered when bees lump together as the colony increases its size and needs more space. They can be found on tree limbs, parts of your home, and other places.

Bees can be a source of panic and cause health issues for someone who is allergic. Rick Anderson is a beekeeper and owner of Green Valley Honey.

“Actually, when the bees are in that stage they are extremely docile,” Anderson said. “When somebody gives me a phone call saying ‘[I] got a swarm in my yard,’ I don’t even wear a bee suit when I go get them and I don’t get stung.”

Anderson emphasized that bees this time of year usually only sting when provoked, and swarm season should last about another 30 days.
