Dog killed after attacking teen, deputy in Cabarrus County: Sheriff

HARRISBURG, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Cabarrus County deputies say three dogs circled a teen and one of them, a rottweiler, attacked him Thursday night.

When deputies responded on Lower Rocky River Road near Harrisburg, they found another teen trapped in her car by the dogs. Investigators say the rottweiler then charged at a deputy, and the deputy shot and killed the dog.

One of the dogs, a mastiff, was captured and taken to animal control. The other, a pit bull, has not been found, and deputies also can’t find the owners of any of the dogs.

A dog yelping

For the most part, Lower Rocky River is a quiet, country road.

“I heard a scream which at the time I’m like, ‘Is that a scream or is it a dog yelping?’” said Tracy Thompson, a neighbor.

Thompson had already seen the dogs running near her yard before she heard the scream.

“My son was being attacked by three dogs in the front yard,” said a panicked woman to the 911 dispatcher.

The mom told 911 that the dogs bit and scratched her 18-year-old son, saying her family had to fight the dogs off him.

“They were biting his arm,” the mom told the dispatcher. “All over, but oh my gosh his arm, his arm for the most part.”

Deputies say the teen was taken to the hospital and was scratched and bitten in the head, arm, and upper body.

The mom told the dispatcher her daughter was trapped in her car while the dogs were still in the yard.

“Stay in the car, one of my daughter’s is out in the car,” the mom explained to the dispatcher.

The dispatcher told the mother to keep her daughter in the car.

When deputies came and were trying to help the teen in the car, they say a Rottweiler charged at one of them, so a deputy shot and killed the dog.

Tracy Thompson said she heard screams from the dog attack.

“It’s scary to come out, especially at night,” said Thompson.

She’s worried because the pit bull is still on the loose.

“It’s a little unnerving especially when you have a dog,” Thompson said. “I don’t want my dog getting in a fight with somebody else’s dog.”

She’s also concerned that deputies haven’t found the dogs’ owners.

They put out pictures of the mastiff hoping someone knows the owners.

“That’s actually worse because if they had the owner, they could be like, ‘Well, where would the dog go?’ or if they find the dog, they could call the dog back,” said Thompson.

Deputies are still trying to track down the pit bull, and they’re also looking into whether the mastiff that’s at animal control was active in the attack, which will determine what happens next with the dog.
