WJBF – A former Evans resident will premiere a new documentary in Augusta Saturday March 23rd.

Kameron Waters is the co-director of Christspiracy, a film that examines how animals are treated in the name of religion. Waters says he and his co-director, Kip Andersen, spent seven years traveling the world and making the film. He says the film raises several questions about the way animals are used in various religions. But there is a heavy focus on Christianity.

“Christianity, or should I say Christ, is the through-line of the whole film,” Waters said, “There was an event that happened that day (Palm Sunday), that Christ did something and said something in the Temple. And both what he said and what he did has been misinterpreted for two thousand years.”

Waters told NewsChannel 6 working on the film lead him to uncover the meaning of that story. He calls it “extraordinary.”

While the title of the film may seem negative, Waters said the film is not intended to attack Christianity.

“We understood that it would be an attention-grabbing title. There was a reason we wanted to do that. But even beyond that, people may think that it’s inherently somehow defaming or talking negatively about the name of Christ. But it’s actually not,” Waters told NewsChannel 6, “We’re just trying to uncover this mis-translation about the words Christ spoke.”

The filmmaker said growing up in the Augusta area helped shape his values. He moved to Los Angeles to start a career in music, specifically Gospel Music. But he says, he started to have an ethical dilemma but that he had an ethical dilemma about how animals were treated.

Waters said he took some time away to ponder the questions he couldn’t get out his mind.

“Some of these questions that this film raises are questions I started asking myself that gave me a step back from my church for a while.

Waters bought a Volkswagen van and a surfboard. He spent time surfing various spots in California. He says he used that time to think and study the topic.

“Essentially I picked up a camera along the way. And about two years into the journey, I met my co-director Kip Andersen who has made previous films on similar topics.”

That’s when the idea to make the film. Christspiracy, was born.
