Former Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat has hinted at a "dynamite" return to the show.

It was recently announced that Moffat will be penning an episode for season 14 with Ncuti Gatwa, after previously claiming he would not be returning to the franchise.

Little is known about the episode, other than it will be directed by Bridgerton's Julie Anne Robinson, but Moffat recently discussed how he came up with the script idea.

The writer was speaking at the University of Glasgow's Screenwriting Society (via The Radio Times) when he described his initial email exchange with current Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies.

"When I was getting involved in the series again, I pitched several ideas to him," Moffat recalled. "I sent several emails until I remember I sent one idea that I thought was dynamite.

"I got an email back within one minute saying, 'That’s it, go write that, I want that immediately.' So I did. It’s a collaboration of enthusiasm… what we’re doing is giggling and laughing and shouting and bounding around the room about how clever and exciting all this is.

"If you're not doing that on a show like Doctor Who — or frankly any show — what's the point?"

Davies certainly seems thrilled to be once again working with Moffat, as he excitedly announced the writer's return to Doctor Who on social media.

"I’ve had a quick look, and there’s a thing that does things and a perfectly ordinary word turned into something TERRIFYING and it’s all in outer space and there’s a woman and OH MY GOD," he wrote on Instagram.

"It is, of course, brilliant. Beyond brilliant, it’s an absolutely mesmerising episode! I’m lucky and proud and honoured to be working with Steven Moffat, the great man."

Moffat originally wrote for Doctor Who during Davies' first tenure as showrunner — penning classic episodes 'The Girl in The Fireplace' and 'Blink', among others. He then took over as producer for the Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi eras.

Doctor Who will return for its 14th series on May 11 at midnight, airing on BBC One in the UK and Disney+ elsewhere. Classic episodes of Doctor Who are available on BBC iPlayer in the UK.
