Doctor Who has unveiled the official trailer for season 14, with a new look at Game of Thrones star Indira Varma's character.

Following the conclusion of last year's Christmas special, the show returns in May to see Sex Education star Ncuti Gatwa begin his travels as the Fifteenth Doctor, alongside companion Ruby Sunday (played by Coronation Street's Millie Gibson).

The new trailer gives audiences an exciting first look at Varma's villain The Duchess, who can be seen unexpectedly changing form during a Bridgerton-esque ball – with the character set to cause chaos for the new Doctor.

The trailer also offers a glimpse at the Doctor and Ruby's journey across the cosmos, where they will explore the groovy sixties, the Regency era in England, war-torn futures and more.

Season 14 will see the pair encounter friends and foes, including the bogeyman – one of the Doctor's most powerful enemies yet.

"Is that a monster?" says Ruby in the trailer as the creature comes into view, with the Doctor replying: "No don't be silly, there's no such thing as monsters. It's just creatures you haven't met yet."

Guest stars featured in the trailer include Bonnie Langford as fan-favourite character Melanie Bush, as well as the return of Anita Dobson, Jemma Redgrave, Yasmin Finney, Michelle Greenidge and Angela Wynter.

Jinkx Monsoon, Lenny Rush and Callie Cooke are also set to appear in the upcoming series.

As well as the new trailer, Whovians can also expect more exciting reveals soon, with a number of Easter treats being lined up.

Doctor Who's showrunner Russell T Davies previously teased the reboot, saying: "At last, it's my great delight to unleash a whole new season of the Doctor and Ruby's adventures together.

"Monsters! Chases! Villains! Mysteries! And a terrifying secret that's been spanning time and space for decades. Don't miss a second!"

Doctor Who will return for its 14th series in May, airing on BBC One in the UK and Disney+ elsewhere. Classic episodes of Doctor Who are available on BBC iPlayer in the UK.
