Dispatch Student of the Week: Canal Winchester's Nathan Hagan

Canal Winchester High School's Nathan Hagan was the winner in this week's Dispatch Student of the Week poll.

Hagan secured 44.2% of the votes cast to top Ava Faiella of St. Francis DeSales High School in Columbus.

Here is Hagan's nomination from the school:

Nathan Hagan, Canal Winchester: “Nathan goes above and beyond when it comes to learning and teaching others tech skills. He has taught himself, staff and his peers tech skills beyond what is offered in the curriculum. He has started a programming club where he prepares activities and then teaches his peers, works one-on-one with his teacher to develop advanced activities for the classroom, troubleshoots any technical problem that is thrown at him, studies on his own time for IT certifications and has passed three this school year and is currently preparing for another, is going to BPA nationals for Linux Administration, and on and on. Nathan is definitely deserving of recognition not only for pursuing his passion but for encouraging and supporting other students interested in tech.”

Ava Faiella, St. Francis DeSales: “Ava will be taking the stage this weekend as one of the lead roles in the school's spring musical “The Music Man,” playing the part of Marian Paroo. She is also the founder and president of the Saint Francis DeSales Alzheimer’s Awareness Club, member of the SFD Autism Awareness Club, a member of the Saint Francis DeSales Mind Over Matter Club (mental health club) and in the National Honor Society and Spanish National Honor Society. Additionally, Ava was on the varsity volleyball and varsity swim team.”

Jordan Anderson, Columbus City Schools' East High: “Jordan is a dynamic student who always puts her best foot forward. We have seen so much growth from her since she started high school in August. Jordan works hard for her grades and constantly shows her work ethic in her classes. She is goal-orientated and passionate. She has established herself as a leader in the school community as an engaging member of the East High marching band, gospel choir and softball team. Her positivity boosts our mood every day, and I am so excited to see how expansive her impact is over the next few years.”

Khina Karki, Reynoldsburg High School: “Khina Karki has been named a semifinalist for the highly competitive Cooke College Scholarship national scholarship. Cooke College Scholars are selected based on exceptional academic ability and achievement, financial need, persistence, service to others and leadership. Khina is a member of the National Honor Society and has a GPA of 4.2.”

Students were nominated by participating central Ohio high school principals, teachers and guidance counselors for outstanding academic and school achievement and community service.
