The directors of the Young Han Solo movie describe their firing like a breakup
Back in June, Phil Lord and Chris Miller were fired from Solo: A Star Wars Story (and were later replaced by Ron Howard). At Vulture Festival in L.A., the former directors of the Young Han Solo movie talked about their departure for the first time publicly — and described it as *tears* a breakup.
Speaking at a panel for MTV’s Clone High, which they created with director Bill Lawrence, Lord and Miller were in good spirits after being let go from the Star Wars spinoff. And they had nothing but kind things to say about their experience working on the film.
As Lord explained, “The experience of shooting the movie was wonderful. We had the most incredible cast and crew and collaborators. I think in terms of us leaving the project, I think everybody went in with really good intentions and our approach to making the movie was different than theirs. That was a really big gap to bridge, and it proved to be too big.”
Then, he made us kind of emotional, TBH, talking about the departure being like a breakup: “Sometimes people break up, and it’s really sad, and it’s really disappointing, but it happens and we learned a lot from our collaborators and we’re better filmmakers for it,” he continued. “We’re really proud of the work we did on the movie and we wish everybody the best.”
Miller seconded his partner, adding, “We had such a great relationship with cast and crew, we were really rooting for them.”
We’re glad to hear Lord and Miller have such a good attitude about all this, and can’t wait to see what they do next. And, of course, we’re excited for Solo: A Star Wars Story, which flies into theaters — Millennium Falcon style — on May 25th, 2018.
