Dilapidated barn collapses near Waterloo, killing one worker and injuring another

One man was killed and another injured when a barn partially collapsed and caught fire north of Waterloo on Saturday morning.

The barn was located off Country Club Lane at Rogers Street, near Waterloo Country Club, according to Monroe County Coroner Bob Hill.

He also confirmed that:

  • A man called 911 at 9:35 a.m. and reported that a dilapidated barn being torn down had collapsed on his two co-workers.

  • First responders with Monroe County Sheriff’s Department, Waterloo Fire Department and Monroe County EMS were able to reach the trapped victims.

  • Deputy Coroner Theresa Hitzmann pronounced a 58-year-old man from Wildwood, Missouri, dead at the scene.

  • Another man was transported by ambulance to Mercy Hospital South in St. Louis County for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

“We’ll be doing an autopsy tomorrow morning since (the 58-year-old’s death) was work-related,” Hill said Saturday afternoon. “That will give us a more definite answer on his cause of death.”

Hill doesn’t plan to release the deceased man’s name until Sunday to allow time for all family members to be notified.

Monroe County Sheriff Neal Rohlfing couldn’t be reached for comment Saturday, nor could Waterloo Police Chief Dane Luke. A sheriff’s deputy on duty Saturday declined comment.
