PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) — A Tarpon Springs man shot and killed another man because he was tired of constantly being “put down” and verbally abused,” according to an affidavit.

Tarpon Springs police responded to 1125 Clarissa Court in the overnight hours on Tuesday. They met with the suspect, Richard Lewis, 54, who was sitting on a couch outside waiting for law enforcement.

Detectives discovered Lewis arrived at the home, where he lives with the victim, after a night of drinking and poker at a local bar, the affidavit reads.

Lewis told officials that he was aggravated with the victim, claiming he had insulted him in front of friends and that he had had enough. The suspect said when he got home, he grabbed the victim’s shotgun from beside his bed and loaded it with three rounds.

The affidavit said Lewis then waited for the victim to come home. When the victim laid down on his bed, that’s when Lewis fired one shot at him and heard the victim yell, “Ow, ow, ow.”

Lewis told police he fired the remaining two rounds, which sent the victim to the ground.

According to the document, Lewis walked outside, threw the shotgun into the yard, and waited for police to arrive.

Lewis claimed that the shooting was “not an accident” and told officials, “I did it because I wanted to.”

The victim was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Lewis was arrested on a charge of first-degree murder and is being held without bond.
