A medical examiner has determined that a man convicted of drug charges in 2018 in Cleveland County died at the hands of fellow inmates at a state prison.

Findings released this week say that Michael F. Crumbley died because of an attack on June 9, 2023.

He died five days later at an outside medical facility.

The State Bureau of Investigation and the Tyrrell County Sheriff’s Department, located in Columbia, North Carolina, continue to investigate the incident.

The Department of Adult Correction has fully cooperated with those investigations and launched an internal investigation, according to a press release.

Crumbley, 58, was serving a 12-year sentence after being convicted as a habitual felon and for drug possession. His projected release date was Jan. 7, 2026. He was a minimum custody offender at the facility.

The names of suspects have not been released.
