Des Moines man charged in alleged drag race that killed motorcyclist

A person has been charged for allegedly drag racing with a motorcyclist who crashed and died.

Ryan Leroy Gile, 33, was charged Monday with two counts of homicide by vehicle, driving while suspended, operating a non-registered vehicle and failure to provide proof of financial liability for the April 7 crash that killed 41-year-old Des Moines resident Mitchell Ohland.

Des Moines police spokesperson Sgt. Paul Parizek said in a news release that evidence indicates Gile allegedly was drag racing his motorcycle with the victim at the time of the crash. Both drivers' speeds reached up to 70 mph, police said.

Ohland was was riding east at 2:07 p.m. when he struck the passenger side of the Jeep, driven by a woman, 61, who was turning left from westbound University onto southbound East 16th Street. Despite wearing a helmet, Ohland was critically injured and died as Des Moines Fire Department medics were transporting him to a hospital, according to a news release.

Gile was booked in the Polk County Jail.
