Deputies: Man killed in single-car crash near Watervliet

KEELER TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Authorities say the driver of a 1957 Chevy Bel Air was killed in a single-car crash near Watervliet.

The Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office said it received a report of a crash around 6:30 p.m. Monday on 84th Avenue in Keeler Township.

Investigators believe the car was heading westbound when the driver lost control due to the gravel road being flooded and crashed into a tree, according to a news release.

The sheriff’s office said the 1957 Chevy Bel Air did not have airbags or seatbelts. The release said there was also “a very aggressive dog” inside the vehicle, which made it difficult for first responders to reach the driver.

The driver died from his injuries, according to the sheriff’s office. His name was not released.

The dog was not injured and returned to family members by Van Buren County Animal Control, the release said.
