Deputies identified in shooting of armed suspect

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department on Wednesday identified two deputies who fired their weapons at an armed suspect on State Route 76.

Lisa Lee and Jorge Chavez were the names of the deputies involved in the shooting of 66-year-old suspect Patrick Wendell Lowell, Lt. Daniel Meyer with the San Diego Police Department said in a news release.

On Saturday around 11:37 a.m., the sheriff’s department received numerous calls about a man brandishing a handgun and in possession of a knife while walking east along Mission Road (SR-76) at Old River Road in Bonsall.

When deputies arrived at the intersection of Mission Road and Via Montellano, they found the man allegedly brandishing a knife in one hand and holding a Glock-style firearm in the other hand, according to police.

“The deputies gave the male numerous commands to drop the weapons he was holding as they waited for additional resources to arrive,” Meyer said. “However, the male refused to drop the weapons he was brandishing, and a deputy-involved shooting occurred.”

That’s when Lee and Chavez fired their department-issued handguns multiple times and struck the suspect in his legs and lower body, per SDPD. Authorities took the suspect into custody as they provided first aid until paramedics arrived.

Lowell was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries while the two deputies were not hurt in the shooting.

Lowell was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon on a Peace Officer and an outstanding felony warrant.

Both Lee and Chavez are currently assigned as patrol deputies from the Vista Patrol Station. They’ve been with the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department for three and five years, respectively.

Authorities say they recovered a Glock replica G19 Gen 3 BB pistol at the scene.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call the Homicide Unit at 619-531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.
