Denver weather: Where, when and how much snow to expect in Colorado Sunday

DENVER (KDVR) — After a mild and sunny week, snow is once again back in the forecast for Denver and the Front Range.

Sunday is a Pinpoint Weather Alert Day in the Foothills and Palmer Divide due to snow and rain in the evening forecast.

The Pinpoint Weather team is still working out the details of the upcoming storm, including exactly where it’s headed, so totals could change as it gets closer. This article will be updated as the storm develops.

Denver weather: Mild Saturday with clouds, rain and snow coming Sunday

What is the timing of the storm?

The Pinpoint Weather team said showers will likely develop Sunday afternoon around 1 or 2 p.m., with some possible thunderstorms on the eastern plains that could produce hail, light rain in Denver and snow in some mountain areas.

Winds will pick up and rain will change to snow as a cold front arrives later on Sunday evening, around 6 or 7 p.m.

Snow will be heaviest in the evening hours and taper after a few hours ending by 3 a.m.

How often does Denver get heavy snow?

How much snow could Denver see?

This storm is nowhere near what Denver saw a week ago, but the Pinpoint Weather team said heavy wet snow could accumulate, especially in the mountains.

Thanks to the recent warm weather in the metro area, as well as the fact that precipitation will start as rain, accumulations will be small.

However, some mountain areas could get 5-9 inches.

March is usually the snowiest month of the year for Denver

Here’s what is in the forecast as of Sunday morning:

  • Denver – 2-5 inches

  • Vail – 11 inches

  • Boulder – 2-5 inches

  • Georgetown– 7 inches

  • Steamboat Springs – 2 inches

  • Castle Rock – 7 inches

These totals do not account for the melting snow.

What will the impacts be?

Several different advisories and warnings have been put into effect by the National Weather Service ahead of this storm.

Denver and Boulder, as well as several areas of the high country, are under a winter weather advisory as of Sunday morning.

For Denver and Boulder, this will be in effect from 6 p.m. Sunday until 9 a.m. Monday. Snow is expected, and the Pinpoint Weather Team said 2-5 inches of accumulation could be seen. There will also be wind gusts of up to 50 mph.

Castle Rock and the Palmer Divide, as well as some areas of Eastern Colorado, will be under a blizzard warning from 6 p.m. Sunday until 9 a.m. Monday. This includes snow accumulations of up to 8 inches in Castle Rock and the Palmer Divide and wind gusts of up to 60 mph.

Visibility may be low in these areas and travel could be very difficult.

Snow will end early Monday, but there could be some slick roads particularly west of Denver into the Foothills, and south of the city across the Palmer Divide.

A Pinpoint Weather Alert Day has been issued for Monday morning due to possibly slick roads.

Leftover flurries and gusty winds could make for slick roads for the Monday morning commute, but advisories are set to expire at 9 a.m.

Skies will start to clear in the mid-morning hours into the afternoon for the metro, while the foothills could have some light snow persist.

The Pinpoint Weather team is watching the forecast for Monday and this article will be updated accordingly.

The area will dry out and warm back up to the mid-60s by mid-week.
