Denver weather: Tornado confirmed on the plains, watch in effect until 9 p.m.

DENVER (KDVR) — Sunny skies help highs make it back to the 70s on Thursday before some storms fire up across the plains in the Denver weather forecast.

The National Weather Service issued a tornado watch Thursday afternoon for Cheyenne, Washington, Kit Carson, Yuma, Phillips, Logan and Sedgwick counties. The watch is in effect until 9 p.m.

A tornado warning was issued at 3:27 p.m. for central Washington County after a confirmed tornado touched down nine miles northwest of Elba, the NWS states. The warning is in effect until 4 p.m.

Weather today: Sunny and warm

Mainly sunny skies will be across the Front Range Thursday, as highs top out in the middle 70s.

Winds will become brisk in the evening, as some storms form across the plains.

The northeast corner of the state is under a slight risk for severe weather, with the biggest threats being large hail and gusty winds.

Weather tonight: Storms on the plains

Storms will linger over the plains overnight Thursday, with partly cloudy skies in the metro. Denver could see a spotty shower as winds stay breezy and lows dip into the upper 40s.

Looking ahead: Cooler and rainy weekend

Friday will have extra clouds and a chance for a spotty shower. Highs are cooler, but above average in the upper 60s with a brisk wind.

Rain should really kick off after sunset Friday night and linger through the weekend.

Saturday will be cooler with highs in the lower 50s and rain showers through the day. Some rain can be heavy, and there can also be some snow along the Palmer Divide.

The mountains and foothills will get a few inches of snow through the start of the weekend.

Rain looks to wrap up on Sunday, but clouds can linger as highs will be in the upper 50s.

Colorado will dry out on Monday with mainly sunny skies and mild highs in the upper 60s.

Tuesday is warmer with highs in the mid-70s, sunny skies and a possible evening shower. Denver may get near 80 degrees on Wednesday with a mix of sun and clouds.
