Denver weather: When might the snow season finally end?
DENVER (KDVR) — Spring snow is just a way of life for Denverites, even if brushing off heavy snow from your car gets old after only doing it a few times.
And as much as you might love to put the snow shovel away for the season the second spring starts, it doesn’t really work like that in the Mile High City or the Front Range.
March is usually the snowiest month of the year for Denver
The spring season — at least meteorologically — begins on March 1 and lasts until summer begins on June 1. Astronomical spring started on March 19 and lasts until June 20.
Still, March and April are two of Denver’s snowiest, with an average of 11.5 inches falling in March and 8.8 inches falling in April, according to the National Weather Service.
With that in mind, how much of Spring does Denver typically have to endure snow for?
The last day for snow
According to the NWS, the average date of the last snowfall for the season is April 28, but there are plenty of situations where snow has fallen later into the year and even past Mother’s Day in May.
Recent history has shown that Denver is all over the place when it comes to the last snowfall of the snow season.
Watch: Rare weather phenomenon spotted during Colorado storm
The following are the last snowfall dates of the season from 2019-2023. To be counted, at least 0.1 inches of snow must be recorded:
2019: May 21
2020: April 16
2021: April 21
2022: May 21
2023: April 22
May 21, 2022, and 2019 are tied with several other years for the sixth-latest snowfall in Denver history.
The absolute latest date that Denver has received measurable snow is June 2, 1951. According to the NWS, on that date, Denver got 0.3 inches of snow. That is the only recorded date in June with any measurable snowfall in the city.
