Denham Springs man arrested, accused of breaching US Capitol in Jan. 6 attack

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — A Denham Springs man was arrested on Thursday, May 23, and faces federal charges in relation to the Jan. 6 attack.

Randy Verdun Sr. was charged with entering or remaining in a restricted building or grounds; disorderly or disruptive orderly conduct in a restricted building or grounds; disorderly conduct in a Capitol building; and parade, demonstrate or picket in a Capitol building.

According to the statement of facts submitted to the U.S. District Court in the District of Columbia, Verdun reportedly attended a rally at the U.S. Capitol for former president and current presidential candidate Donald Trump on Jan. 6, 2021. The crowd scaled barricades and broke windows, entering the building and disrupting the House and Senate from being able to confirm the vote of the Electoral College.

One dead, two hurt in Baton Rouge shooting, officials say

The FBI received photos of a man, identified to be Verdun, at the event. Per the court filing, he “wore a red beanie under a distinct camouflage baseball cap with an American flag bill, a black leather jacket, a black and gray Swiss Army backpack, a black shirt, and black gloves.” A total of six photos were attached to the initial court documents.

In an April 16 interview with investigators, Verdun reportedly identified himself in several photos and said he entered the building after seeing fights between Capitol Police and the rioters.

Based on CCTV footage, Verdun is believed to have entered the building around 2:25 p.m. EST. The Senate Wing doors had been breached about 10 minutes earlier. The footage then shows he followed rioters to the Capitol Crypt, and there’s a video of him taking photos or video in the background of another man’s footage.

He reportedly went back to the Senate Wing around 2:30 p.m. and was escorted by Capitol Police, along with other rioters, out of the building. He left through a broken window at 2:35 p.m.

Per CCTV footage, he stayed on the grounds and came back into the building around 2:58 p.m. through a fire door close to the Parliamentarian’s office. That door was breached by other rioters around 2:42 p.m. Around 3 p.m., Capitol Police successfully pushed the rioters out via the Brumidi Corridor to the Upper West Terrace.
