Democrat Gauthier will challenge McCarty for 38th District rep seat
May 16—WATERFORD — Democrats nominated Nick Gauthier on Wednesday to run for the 38th District state House of Representatives seat currently held by incumbent Republican Kathleen McCarty, who was nominated by her party on Thursday.
The district includes Waterford and parts of the Oakdale and Uncasville sections of Montville.
In a news release, 37-year-old Gauthier, who works for Waterford Senior Services, described himself as a champion for the working class and someone who would energetically respond to families' needs at a state level.
"I am proud and honored to accept this nomination," said Gauthier. "I promise that, when elected, I will bring the fight to Hartford to get a fair shake for working families across Waterford and Montville."
McCarty, 74, is seeking her sixth term. She currently serves as ranking member of the legislature's Education Committee, and is a member of the Appropriations and Public Health committees.
"I would like to tell you that I take this job very seriously, and I try to do the very best of my ability to represent everyone in the town," she said Thursday. "It's not easy, we get very difficult proposals in front of us sometimes and I try to think, 'what would my community want? How should I vote for this community?' And many times I have to break rank to do that but its part of the job."
Gauthier challenged McCarty for the seat in 2022, but lost by a vote of 5,628-5,398.
