Del City PD releases more information in fatal crash

DEL CITY, Okla. (KFOR) – The Del City Police Department has released more information regarding a fatal car accident on Saturday, April 20.

According to Del City Police, the accident happened near the 3100 block of SE 15th St. around 8:12 p.m. on Saturday.

“It simply appears that this group was coming home from an event, possibly driving too fast and lost control of their vehicle,” said Major Brad Cowden, Del City Police.

Upon arrival, officers found one vehicle driven by 54-year-old Helen Thompson and four passengers ages 6, 7, 9 and 13.

“All but two people in the vehicle were not wearing seat belts,” said Cowden.

As officers and firefighters began investigating, they discovered a 6-year-old girl unrestrained in the car who had been ejected and pronounced dead at the scene due to her injuries. Thompson and two other children were pinned and had to be removed from the car. A fifth passenger, a 9-year-old boy, was able to get out by himself.

After being removed from the vehicle, a 7-year-old boy was pronounced dead at the scene. Thompson and a 13-year-old girl were taken to a nearby hospital where Thompson was also pronounced dead.

Officials say the 13-year-old is critically injured and the 9-year-old boy is stable.

“The driver was the grandmother and guardian of the 13-year-old and the nine-year-old that survived,” said Cowden. “The two children who were deceased are actually unrelated. They just lived down the street.”

The cause of the crash is still being investigated. Family members of the two children who died said the siblings recently moved to the Oklahoma City area from Louisiana.

“I can’t even put into words probably what they’re going through right now. The schools they all attended here, local schools, family and friends and just the community as a whole,” said Cowden.

No more information is available at this time.
