DECATUR, Ill. (WCIA) — Governor Richard J. Oglesby Mansion in Decatur is opening to the public later this month with a pair of open houses.

One month after the mansion hosted an open house in April, the mansion is opening up again for Historic Preservation Week. People can come take a tour, take photos and kids can get a Flat Lincoln (a small cutout of Abraham Lincoln). A $2 donation is requested for entry.

Open House planned for Decatur’s Powers Mansion

The home is the only surviving one that the Governor of Illinois once lived in. Richard Oglesby, the only person to serve as Governor of Illinois three times, was a close friend of Abraham Lincoln and nominated him for the presidency in 1860.

“We are fortunate to have this beautiful home as a vessel to tell the stories of the life of the Governor,” Carol Pelz, President of the Governor Oglesby Mansion Board, said in a news release.

The open houses will be Sunday, May 18, and Sunday, May 26, both from 2 to 4 p.m.
