Cash-strapped Schalke have stopped short of confirming a news report that they would consider selling their stadium in the case of relegation into the third division.

The Sport Bild weekly reported on Wednesday that the sale of the 60,000-seat arena and savings in other areas of the club could be on the agenda if Schalke failed to stay in the second tier.

Schalke issued a statement, without going into details.

"As already communicated several times in recent months, the club is examining various options for different scenarios. Nothing has changed in this regard," the club said.

Schalke were relegated from the Bundesliga for the second time in two years in 2023 and lie 14th in the second division, just two points above the danger zone.

Another relegation would hit the former UEFA Cup champions hard but big savings are reportedly also necessary if they stay in the second division.
