Deadly blaze investigation by NE Ohio firefighters

STARK COUNTY, Ohio (WJW) — A fatal fire is under investigation in Jackson Township that has left one person dead.

Firefighters said they responded to a 3-unit apartment building on Harris Avenue NW around 10 p.m. Saturday when a 9-1-1 caller reported a residential fire, with a person still inside. Officials said that upon arrival, fire crews saw flames shooting out through a door and a window.

According to Jackson Fire Chief Tim Berczik, “Our hearts go out to the family that lost a loved one. We want to urge all of our residents to have working smoke alarms on every level of your home and if you hear those alarms sound, please, get out, stay out and close the doors on the way out.”

Fire departments from Massillon City, and Plain Township Fire & Rescue-Stark County, Ohio provided mutual aid support. The State Fire Marshals and Jackson Police detectives are assisting Jackson Fire with the investigation.

Fisherman drowns in local lake, police

Officials haven’t released the name of the victim at this time.
