Deadly accident on Old Savannah Road claims one life

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – One person has died after a fatal accident on Savannah Road in Augusta.

Richmond County Coroner Mark Bowen tells us that 26-year-old Deveunte Zavien Calloway was travelling on Old Savannah Road at 13th Avenue on Sunday when he lost control of his vehicle.

The vehicle crashed into a fence and guardrail and ended up partially submerged in the canal.

Coroner Bowen says that Calloway had to be extricated from the vehicle by EMS.

Calloway was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead at 9:19 p.m.

An autopsy has been scheduled.

VinFast crash that killed family of four now under federal investigation
The top vehicle safety regulator in the U.S. has launched a formal probe into an April crash involving the all-electric VinFast VF8 SUV that claimed the lives of a family of four, TechCrunch has learned. A spokesperson for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) told TechCrunch on Monday that its Special Crash Investigations division will "document the crash circumstances and the ensuing fire." The victims, who have been identified by the Alameda County Sheriff's Department as Tarun and Rincy George, and their two children, did not own the vehicle.

The U.K.'s self-proclaimed "world-leading" regulations for self-driving cars are now official, after the Automated Vehicles (AV) Act received royal assent -- the final rubber stamp any legislation must go through before becoming enshrined in law. "While this doesn’t take away people’s ability to choose to drive themselves, our landmark legislation means self-driving vehicles can be rolled out on British roads as soon as 2026, in a real boost to both safety and our economy," Transport Secretary Mark Harper said in a statement.
