Deadline for Baton Rouge groups to apply for Summer of Hope community funding nears

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — Safe, Hopeful, Healthy BR is designed to address violence in Baton Rouge while assisting youth and families dealing with emotional trauma. The program announced that all community-driven organizations apply for the Summer of Hope 2024 Community Fund before Friday, May 3.

“The process is not that difficult. Some grant applications can be long, and they can really be grudgeful,” Melvilyn Hamilton, the founder of the Someone Always Cares Foundation, said.

The funds allow organizations like the Someone Always Cares Foundation to use the money to fill a need.

SHHBR website said the grant operates on a reimbursement basis, with an advance payment of 15% available.

Hamilton said her goal is to expose underrepresented youth to healthy environments.

“Once a young person makes a mistake, and maybe not a mistake, makes a decision that places them in the path of the justice system’s involvement, it’s even more important that you don’t give up on them at that time,” Hamilton said.

Hamilton said the mission is to uplift teenagers who’ve been admitted into the system from experiences with trauma, crime, incarceration, abuse and lack of resources.

“If the community doesn’t find a way to come together to service them, we’re going to have young people who are going to evolve as adults in the justice system, so we can’t give up on them,” Hamilton said.
