Suicide suspected after body found in burning car in Clearwater Beach hotel garage

Investigators believe a man found dead Wednesday in a burning car parked in a Clearwater Beach hotel parking garage died by suicide, police said.

Police and Clearwater Fire and Rescue responded about 2:30 a.m. to the car fire on the third floor of the parking garage at the Edge Clearwater Beach Hotel at 505 S. Gulfview Blvd., according to the Clearwater Police Department. After firefighters put out the fire, they found a dead man inside the car.

A preliminary investigation by homicide detectives found that the man set his car on fire and then shot himself, according to police.

Police have not released the man’s name but said investigators think he is not from the Tampa Bay area.
