DC Wharf to host ‘Bloomaroo’ spring festival

WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — Bloomaroo, the Wharf’s annual spring festival, is happening this Saturday afternoon, after it was postponed due to last weekend’s rainy weather.

The festival is spread across the entire Wharf, featuring multiple stages with live music, crafts for children, karaoke, anime movie screenings, Blossom martinis and a beauty bar.

The highlight of the event, however, is the fireworks show, which is at 8:30 p.m.

The event is an ode to the picturesque cherry blossoms that litter the city’s landscape, as their peak bloom is about to end.

The festival is also an opportunity to learn about and celebrate Japanese culture, as diplomacy between the two countries is the reason behind the tree’s existence in D.C. Visitors can attend a tea ceremony, observe an art demonstration and watch cherry blossom dancers.

Though the whole event allows children, kid-centric events will be concentrated near the southeastern side of the Wharf. This includes crafts, such as koi kite decorating, face painting, haiku-writing and a balloon artist.

Live music is stationed on the Wharf’s two piers at the Transit Pier Floating Stage and the District Pier stage. The event’s website says popular local D.C. artists will be featured, including Perfekt Band, Too Much Talent Band, Jimi Smooth & HitTime, Under the Covers, Starlight Anthem and Chuck Brown Band.

The DC Shiba Inu Recuse is also making an appearance from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., and visitors can learn about the native Japanese breed and hang out with the fluffy friends, all available for adoption.

The attractions are sure to draw large crowds from across the metro area, so the organizers are warning visitors of possible traffic and minimum parking spaces available. The Wharf has three underground parking garages and several off-site parking garages within walking distance.

To avoid the chaos of driving, the event recommends using public transit. The Waterfront Station Metro stop is one block away, and there is a free Southwest Shuttle from the L’Enfant Plaza Metro station.

The celebration is free and will last from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. You can RSVP on the event’s Facebook page.
