WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — This time of year, when you hear “Tidal Basin” in D.C., you likely are associating it with the iconic cherry trees that are in bloom, thinking of the throngs of visitors there to see the cherry blossoms.

There seemed to be a lot of interest in the Tidal Basin on Google on Monday, but the reason didn’t have to do with trees.

First day of Cherry Blossom Festival draws thousands

As you probably know, there are plenty of memorials around the basin, and it seemed one in particular had people’ s attention. More specifically, it was a single statue that had people hitting he search engine. Which one? Well, that was the question along with another one: “Why?”

It seems the New York Times had a little something to do with it. The Times offers mini crosswords each day, and one of the clues for April 1 was behind the breakout search that was taking place.

The New York Times’ clue for 3 Down reads: “His statue can be found around D.C.’s Tidal Basin.”
