DC to host Annual National Peace Officers’ Memorial Service; What attendees should know

WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — Roads in Northwest D.C. will be closed on Wednesday afternoon for the Annual National Peace Officers’ Memorial Service.

The service, which is sponsored by the National Fraternal Order of Police and the Grand Lodge Fraternal Order of Police Auxiliary, honors fallen officers.

Road closures in Northwest DC for National Asian Heritage Festival announced

The U.S. Capitol Police (USCP) said that there will be street closures that start Tuesday night and continue until 8 p.m. on May 15. Tour buses will also be rerouted to Union Station for passengers to get on and off.

These roads will be closed:

  • First Street between Constitution Avenue, NW and Independence Avenue, SW

  • Pennsylvania Avenue between First Street, NW and 3rd Street, NW

  • Maryland Avenue between First Street, SW and 3rd Street, SW

The event has different restrictions from previous years — any armed law enforcement personnel attending in uniform must present two forms of government identification, one of which needs to be their issued law enforcement identification.

Armed law enforcement in plainclothes must also present these forms of identification and must wear their police badge or shield on their outer layer of clothing.

USCP also provided the following list of prohibited items:

  • Weapons of any kind

  • Aerosols

  • Air horns

  • Alcohol

  • Ammunition

  • Animals (other than service animals)

  • Backpacks

  • Bags exceeding 18” x 14” x 8.5”

  • Balloons

  • Bicycles

  • Chairs (other than those for disabled persons)

  • Coolers

  • Drones and other unmanned ground or aircraft systems

  • Explosives of any kind (including fireworks)

  • Firearms

  • Glass and metal containers

  • Thermoses

  • Knives, blades, or sharp objects (of any length)

  • Laser pointers

  • Mace and/or pepper spray

  • Packages

  • Pocket or hand tools, such as “Leatherman”

  • Selfie sticks

  • Strollers

  • Structures such as folding tables, canopies and tents

  • Signs or supports for signs exceeding 5x3x1 made of any material except cardboard, poster board or cloth

  • Toy guns

  • Umbrellas larger 36” in diameter (those smaller than 36” will be allowed)
