Daytona Beach police investigate bomb threat calls made to Volusia County schools

A bomb threat was called in to Campbell Middle School in Daytona Beach and at one other school in Volusia County Thursday, officials said.

As Daytona Beach police worked that call, a bomb threat call was made to Burns Elementary School in Oak Hill.

"This afternoon, Campbell Middle School received notification of an anonymous threat called into law enforcement regarding the school," said Danielle Johnson, spokeswoman for Volusia County schools. "There was an increased presence of law enforcement while this threat was investigated, and it was quickly determined that it was part of a hoax that is circulating around the state. All students and staff are safe."

No lockdowns were put in place, Johnson said.

Johnson said the calls were part of "swatting calls" that are occurring statewide.

"Swatting calls" are an increasing nationwide trend in which someone makes false reports of a shooting or bomb threat prompting a law enforcement response, such as SWAT teams, to schools and causing lockdowns, officials said.

On Wednesday, Daytona Beach police received two such calls while five were made in Flagler County, officials said.

Buddy Taylor Middle School and Wadsworth Elementary School in Palm Coast were also placed on lockdown Wednesday due to what officials believe were swatting calls.
