Davis police officer fired over man’s 2019 death at Golden 1 Center Sacramento
(FOX40.COM) — An officer from the Davis Police Department was fired abruptly after the force learned about his deadly past.
Former officer, Drake Quitugua, was recently fired for his involvement in the 2019 death of Mario Matthews at the Golden 1 Center in Sacramento. Matthews was allegedly trespassing at the arena around 3:30 a.m. in July of that year. He was captured on video running and dancing shirtless before being approached by three Sacramento police officers and three security guards – one of whom was Quitugua.

Video footage showed officers restraining Matthews in a tunnel before he was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead two days later. Matthews’ family sued the security company, Allied Universal, and the City of Sacramento for wrongful death. They were awarded more than $1M.
DPD said it learned that Quitugua was one of the security guards involved. He was able to seep through the background check process because he had two first names. No affiliation with the incident was revealed before employment and although DPD said there were no “red flags,” Quitugua was terminated immediately.
