St. Johns County Professional Firefighters & Paramedics Association – IAFF Affiliate 3865 President David Stevens is being honored by Gov. Ron DeSantis as a Florida Hero.

Recognized for his courage, compassion and resilience, Stevens was one of 75 first responders, doctors, veterans, law enforcement, philanthropists, entrepreneurs, parents and innovators acknowledged for their bravery and self-sacrifice during a reception at the governor’s residence last month.

“It was a privilege to recognize and personally thank each Florida hero in attendance for their selfless dedication to their communities and our state,” DeSantis said in a press release. “In Florida, we want to recognize and extoll the virtues of selflessness and service, and these 75 individuals embodied those virtues through their actions and achievements.”

Each hero had their story displayed throughout the governor’s residence. Stevens’ story read as follows:

Fire Union 3865 President David Stevens fights for the safety and well-being of the men and women in his fire department, working to acquire safer uniforms, mending relationships to encourage collaboration with surrounding fire departments, and engaging with the County Commission to expand mental health resources for his team and their families. David also works with state legislators to advocate for resources for those with long-term illnesses caused by exposure in the line of duty.”

In a press release, Stevens underscored the importance of the collaborative work between the Board of County Commissioners (BOCC), County Administrator Joy Andrews, Fire Chief Sean McGee and St. Johns County Fire & Rescue firefighters.

“Our team is working hard to assure St. Johns County is a model for Florida,” he said. “From our mental health initiatives to protecting our residents and visitors, St. Johns County is leading the way."

Sarah Arnold, BOCC chair, described Stevens as the ultimate hero who relentlessly fights for the wellbeing of others.

“Spearheading PFAS research to acquire safer uniforms, mending relationships to encourage collaboration with surrounding fire departments, and working with the County Commission to expand mental health resources for his team and their families are just a few of his accomplishments to date,” she said in a press release.

Andrews spoke of Stevens’ commitment to fire rescue personnel, including his passion to expand disability coverage for firefighters to include neurological disorders, such as Parkinson’s disease, caused by exposure to toxic chemicals in the line of duty.

“David has championed this initiative, advocating and educating the community, the County Commission, and the state legislature to work towards studies that will undoubtedly lead to further protection for fire rescue personnel statewide,” she said in a press release.
