David Russ on running for District 6, top issues, what’s going right

KOIN 6 News contacted candidates who are running for Oregon’s Sixth Congressional District in 2024, asking them to respond to these four questions:

  • Why are you running for office?

  • What is your prior government/civic experience?

  • In your opinion, what are the top three issues facing the Fifth District and the state of Oregon?

  • In your opinion, what is going right in the Fifth District and Oregon? How do you plan to build on it?

David Russ is running as a Republican. Here are his responses:

Why are you running for office?

In the simplest terms, to serve the people of Oregon Congressional District 6 and the Constitution for the United States of America (RussIsForUS.com/together). The people of District 6, and this nation need leaders with the backbone to stand up to the Washington DC “shenanigans.” My highest priorities are God, the Constitution and you (RussIsForUS.com/god-the-constitution-and-you). I will not try to legislate religion into government, but I believe that having morality and ethics (“God” – RussIsForUS.com/god) and adhering to the law (The Constitution) is the best way to serve YOU. That is because that I know that both God, and The Constitution have You as their number one priority. Therefore, when I focus on them you will always be number one.

What is your prior government/civic experience?

City Councilor City of Dundee – 2014

Mayor City of Dundee – 2015 to Present

Yamhill County Parkway Committee – 2015 to Present

Chair Dundee Urban Renewal Agency – 2016 to Present

Yamhill County Local Public Safety Coordinating Council – 2023 to Present

My leadership as Mayor of the City of Dundee has ushered in more economic development and infrastructure improvements than any previous Mayor. Things that I have set in motion will help to insure the City’s stability and property values for years to come.

I am the only Republican candidate in this race who both has experience serving as an elected official and lives within the district boundaries. The quality of my service is punctuated by having endorsements from local conservative leaders who know my work.

Lindsay Berschauer, Yamhill County Commissioner

Mary Starrett, Yamhill County Commissioner

In your opinion, what are the top three issues facing the Sixth District and the state of Oregon?

As a federal representative, the issues I am able to focus on and solve are limited by the Constitution. There are so many issues that start at the federal level and affect the people and businesses of the Sixth District that choosing three seems very incomplete. However, the truth is that they all have basically the same cause. Of course, the border/immigration and the economy/debt/budget are the elephants in the room, but here are the Big 3 for District Six and Oregon:

  1. Government infringement and oppressive controls on small business. Small businesses are the heart and soul of our district. Over regulation and excessive taxation is destroying our small businesses.

  2. Dangerous and oppressive government controls on agriculture and forestry. Short sighted and overbearing government controls on our farmers and loggers has destroyed companies, jobs, farm/forest land and homes.

  3. Crime. In recent years, the federal government has embraced and encouraged dangerous criminal activities. I would even say they are participating by allowing drugs and criminals to cross the border.

All of these issues are basically caused by violations of the 10th Amendment of the Constitution for The United States of America. That is to say that the federal government is dictating things that are strictly the responsibility of your state. I hope to remove federal controls that limit our ability to manage the commerce, lands, and law enforcement within our state. RussIsForUS.com/what-if.

In your opinion, what is going right in the Sixth District and Oregon? How do you plan to build on it?

Oregon Congressional District Six is filled with strong caring people who love the United States of America and are willing to work to keep it the greatest nation on earth. District Six also has a strong local economy with the economic diversity, innovation and work ethic to maintain itself autonomously. I intend to support and bolster these positive attributes by eliminating government overreach thereby giving the people and businesses of Oregon Congressional District Six the freedom and liberty they need to ensure their own prosperity. To do this we must get the federal government out of the business of regulation.

You will hear other candidates say that they will help to build the district by bringing in more federal funds for local projects. This is telling you that they will tax you $1 and return $0.10 for your project. As long as the federal government continues this disgusting practice, I will seek to bring as much of that $0.10 back to you as I can for local projects. However, it is my goal to take the federal government out of the process so that you will have more money to do your projects. When your local municipality collects the money and does the work about 95% of your money goes to the project. If the money is processed by the state first, you will get about 80% of the money you paid in for your project. We do not need to give the federal government $0.90 of every $1 in order to have the right to beg them for $0.10 to maintain our communities and infrastructure.

If you want the insanity of the uniparty to end, you have to break the cycle. That is why #RussIsForUS. RussIsForUS.com/insane.
