David DePape jury selection begins in state trial

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — Jury selection begins Wednesday morning in the state trial of the man accused of bludgeoning Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi’s husband with a hammer in October of 2022. David DePape was sentenced to 30 years in prison in a federal trial last week.

Now, DePape, 44, faces charges from state prosecutors of attempted murder, burglary and assault on Paul Pelosi. DePape admitted that be broke into the Pelosis’ Pacific Heights home with the intent of holding then-Speaker Pelosi hostage and videotaping her admitting the government was corrupt.

Prosecutors in the federal case asked for 40 years. He was sentenced to 20 years for one count and 30 for a second count with the two sentences to run concurrently. However, due to a sentencing error from the judge in the federal case, DePape is due to be resentenced next week, at which time he will be given a chance to speak.

In the meantime, DePape’s state trial is expected to last about three weeks.
