DAV hosts Memorial Day parade, season opens for Dock Spiders, Farmers Market: Your can't-miss events in Fond du Lac

FOND DU LAC – The Memorial Day parade and ceremony May 27 will honor those who lost their lives while serving our country.

Open for the season on Saturdays is the farmers' market while the Dock Spiders will play their first game against Wisconsin Rapids on Memorial Day.

Also be on the lookout for the Food Truck Festival, featuring 36 vendors.

1. Memorial Day parade, ceremony to begin at 10 a.m.

The Disabled American Veterans group is the host of this year’s Memorial Day parade. The parade will start at 10 a.m. at the corner of Rees and Main streets, ending at Veterans Park, 190 S. Main St.

Lineup for the parade will be 8:45 to 9:55 a.m. in the Fives parking lot.

A ceremony will begin at 11:30 a.m., immediately after the parade. The keynote speaker is Retired Master Gunnery Sgt. Doug Fraser, United States Marine Corps.

2. Farmers' market now open Saturdays for summer season

The Downtown Fond du Lac Farmers Market is open 8 a.m. to noon every Saturday, now through Oct. 26. The market is on Main Street from Forest to Western avenues.

More than 80 vendors sell Wisconsin-grown produce, plants, flowers, baked goods, meats and cheese. Other items available to purchase include crafts, arts, pottery and many other handmade items.

A variety of local groups will provide live music each week. The performer for May 25 is Love, Light & Harmony.

The market is pet-friendly, though all pets must be leashed and kept away from food items. Pet owners must clean up after their pet.

3. Award-winning blues band to perform at Thelma

The Katz Sass is a high-energy blues/rock dance band that will perform May 24 at Thelma Sadoff Center for the Arts, 51 Sheboygan St. The show will begin at 7 p.m. in the Great Hall and the bar opens at 6 p.m.

The band was a WAMI Nominee for Blues Artist of the Year in 2013, 2014 and 2016. Keyboardist Kevin Schultz won the 2023 WAMI award for Organist of the Year, and "Is it Wrong," written by The Katz Sass, was a WAMI finalist for 2023 Blues song of the Year.

General admission is $15, a pub table is $20 and a bistro table is $25. Members will receive 20% off. Individual tickets may be purchased online at thelmaarts.org. For table seating, call 920-921-5410.

4. Fondy Food Truck Festival to feature 36 vendors

The Fondy Food Truck Festival will take over Lakeside Park, 555 N. Park Ave. on May 26. There will be 36 food trucks offering food and drink for sale from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Oven Island in the park.

The variety of foods range from Thai, Caribbean and Mexican to barbecue, sandwiches, desserts and more. Groove Kats will play live music from noon to 4 p.m.

Non-profits will share information about their groups while the Sheriff’s Department will have its new Dive Trailer on display for visitors to walk through.

Kids can enjoy bouncy houses, a petting zoo, face painting and balloon twisting, among other activities.

5. Dock Spiders to play opening-day game May 27

The Dock Spiders will play their first home game of the season May 27 against the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters. The game starts at 1:05 p.m. at Herr-Baker Field, 980 E. Division St.

Also for the 2024 season, each time a Dock Spiders player steals a base during home games, Silica For Your Home will donate $50 to the Boys & Girls Club of Fond du Lac. This is the second season of the program.

Both organizations were honored recently by the Boys & Girls Club of Fond du Lac with the 2024 Commitment to Kids Award.
