Data: These are the 10 safest cities in Colorado

DENVER (KDVR) — As Colorado is seeing an increase in violent crime, a recent report analyzing crime rates revealed which towns are the safest in the Centennial State.

Home security product reviewer Safewise analyzed 2022 crime data from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, which is the most recent data available, to determine which Colorado cities are the safest and have the lowest crime rates.

Notably, not all cities report crime data to the FBI, so the study referred to the 2022 data that was released in October 2023.

According to the report, Colorado has the fourth-highest violent crime rate in the nation at 5.8 incidents per 1,000 people in 2022. The report noted that violent crime rates increased for the third year in a row. The national average was 4.8 per 1,000 people.

Colorado also had the second-highest property crime rate in the nation at 32.7 incidents per 1,000 people, a 4% increase from the prior year and 58% higher than the national average of 20.7. Nationally, property crime rates increased quicker than Colorado with a 7% increase from 2021.

Meanwhile, the safest cities in Colorado reported 27% fewer burglaries than the state overall, the report says.

According to the report, Milliken reported just one violent crime and 37 property crimes in 2021. Each of the 10 safest cities reported fewer than two violent crimes per 1,000 people in 2022.

Milliken, Windsor, Severance, and Gypsum each reported fewer than 10 property crimes per 1,000 people.

Milliken, Severance, Gypsum, Timnath, and Woodland Park each reported fewer than 10 burglaries, according to the report.

Here are some other notable statistics found in the report:

  • Motor vehicle thefts make up 25% of all property crime in Colorado, 71% more than the national average

  • Violent crime represents 15% of all crime in Colorado, one percentage point lower than the national average.

  • Robbery accounts for 26% of violent crime in Colorado, which is 59% higher than the national average of 11%.

Each of the safest cities reported zero murders in 2022 except Castle Rock which reported 3.
