Danville students race on makeshift boats for class project

DANVILLE, Ill. (WCIA) — Students in Danville used their skills from the classroom to sail across the school pool.

The honors geometry class at Danville High School found a fun way to end the year. Students spent last week designing and building a prototype boat. Here’s the challenge: they could only work with cardboard and duct tape.

Teacher Mitch Thomas said it’s their first time doing this project in four years.

“A lot of us just, you know, working together, coming up with an idea, a design, and then just working together to put it together — that’s the main thing. And like I said, having fun.”

Nine boats were in this year’s competition. It’s the first time they’ve held it since COVID. Thomas said he plans for this project to set sail for years to come.
