Danville council OKs Wawa development plan

May 14—DANVILLE — A development group is making progress on a planned Wawa and fast food restaurant proposed to be built on U.S. Route 11.

Danville Borough Council preliminarily approved plans for the project Tuesday.

The borough planning commission reviewed a land development and subdivision plan for the construction of a Wawa gas station and convenience store on a vacant lot of land on Montour Boulevard.

The proposed lot is across from State Hospital Drive. Route 11 and State Hospital Drive would become a four-way intersection. The new roadwayy would lead into a parking lot with access to a fast food restaurant as well as eight fuel pumps and a convenience store.

Borough Council President Mark DeRoba said the planning commission and engineers suggested changes to the plan.

Randy Webster, engineer for Danville Development, said the group is confident they can address all of the commission's comments and get necessary approvals.

Council members and members of the public in attendance during Tuesday's meeting questioned the safety of children with Danville Primary and High School being across Route 11 from the proposed site.

Webster said the group is proposing a crosswalk on the west side of the intersection as well as a sidewalk parallel to Route 11.

In other news, the council approved a memorandum of understanding with Moose Lodge #1133 for Hometown Heroes banners.

DeRoba said the group bringing the banners to the borough has had a lot of interest from the public and he anticipates them asking for additional space for banners in the future.
