Damaging winds blow through Chicagoland late Tuesday and early Wednesday

CHICAGO — High winds overnight Tuesday into Wednesday left a trail of damage in Chicagoland, both in the city and in the suburbs.

Multiple deaths confirmed from a tornado in Iowa, state patrol says

Some Chicagoland residents woke up to damage, like on West School Street in Roscoe Village on the city’s North Side, where this huge tree limb came down on a vehicle:

The Chicago Department of Streets and Sanitation Bureau of Forestry received more than 1,900 tree emergency requests since Tuesday.

The storms also caused a tree to fall on a vehicle in Elgin, puncturing a hole in the windshield and leaving two people injured:

In the northern suburbs, meanwhile, crews removed a tree off a home in Round Lake Beach:

Thankfully, the homeowner told WGN News nobody was injured in that incident.

Trains didn’t escape unscathed either, as a tree fell on the Yellow Line tracks near the Dempster-Skokie stop on the North Side, at one point suspending services:

Even if it wasn’t actually raining, high winds were prevalent throughout Chicagoland late Tuesday and early Wednesday. At O’Hare International Airport, wind gusts reached 55 miles per hour.

The storms and high winds also caused some power outages throughout Chicagoland. As of just after 4 p.m. Wednesday, electric utility ComEd reported 4,085 customers still affected and 192 active outages in Chicagoland and surrounding areas in Illinois.

Fortunately, WGN News can report Wednesday the storms didn’t cause any fatalities in the area. They did, however, leave behind many images of their power, like these:

It was still pretty breezy early Wednesday morning, but things will calm down as the day progresses, with plenty of sunshine and temperatures in the mid-70s.
