Dale Co. Chairman candidates spar ahead of runoff election

DALE COUNTY, Ala. (WDHN) — Voters in Dale County will take the polls across the 16 voting locations to decide on their next county commission chairman.

Accusations are flying ahead of Tuesday’s runoff election between current chairman Steve McKinnon and current commissioner Adam Enfinger.

“That is untruth and is strictly just mudslinging,” McKinnon said.

“I don’t see it as mudslinging,” Enfinger said. “We laid out the facts trying to show a difference between myself and my opponent.”

Enfinger accuses his opponent of financial irresponsibility after McKinnon was forced to pay $3,000 in fines to the Secretary of State’s office.

“That was a glitch on the Secretary of State’s computer,” Mckinnon said. “It happened to about 28 people across the state. When the outcome finally came they told me I could tell the person handling my reports that we could appeal it or move forward and pay the fine.”

An issue raised by McKinnon has to do with Enfinger wanting to lower the expenditure threshold from $30,000 to $5,000. Mckinnon says he doesn’t see the purpose of it and thinks it would slow down work in the county.

Enfinger says the proposal would be a way to save money, which goes into his other proposal for adding budget hearings.

“The whole goal behind that is so that the citizens of Dale County know where the money is being spent,” Enfinger said.

Last month in the primary election three candidates vied for the position.

McKinnon received 42% of the vote, Enfinger received 40%, and Pinckard Mayor Bobby Borland received 18%.

Borland is now supporting McKinnon.

“Mr. Borland has given me full support from his race,” Mckinnon said. “He is entertaining all of his people who voted for him to vote for me.”

The polls will open at 7 a.m. on Tuesday and will close at 7 p.m. that night.

“Myself and Chairman McKinnon both have made our cases and I think it is up to the voters now to decide the direction they want to see their county go in,” Enfinger said.
