Cumberlands women’s basketball surprises Campbellsville to reach its first NAIA Final Four

The fourth time was the charm for the Cumberlands women’s basketball team.

The Patriots, who had lost to Campbellsville three times this season, prevailed when it counted most by knocking off the Tigers 88-77 in the NAIA Tournament’s Elite Eight on Saturday in Sioux City, Iowa.

Cumberlands, a 3 seed, will play in the national semifinals for the first time in program history when it faces Dordt (Iowa), the lone remaining 1 seed, at 9 p.m. EDT Monday.

Kassie Monday scored 20 points and had eight assists to help lead the way for the Patriots in Saturday’s win. Kaylie Monday added 20 points, including setting a Patriots NAIA Tournament record with six 3-pointers to go along with seven rebounds and six assists.

The Patriots shot 61.5% from the field compared to the Tigers’ 43.6%.

Kayla Luebbe led Campbellsville with 20 points.

Earlier this season, the Tigers defeated the Patriots 88-70 in Williamsburg on Jan. 21, 101-68 at home on Feb. 8, and 74-64 in Bowling Green in the Mid-South Tournament finals on March 4.

Cumberlands (26-9) and Dordt (33-2) will be joined in the Final Four by 2-seed Carroll (Mont.) (28-5) and 2-seed Providence (Mont.) (26-8).
