Culp surpasses Callahan for auditor

May 7—ANDERSON — Todd Culp, who will be on the ballot for the Nov. 5 election, is thrilled to continue on.

Culp defeated Katherine Callahan in a close race Tuesday for the Republican Party nomination for Madison County auditor.

"I believe I provide genuine service to the taxpayer," he said when asked what made him stand out from his opponent.

Culp has enjoyed being chief deputy auditor for the past eight years but is excited about the possibility of being elected auditor.

Rick Gardner, who currently serves as auditor, is excited for Culp. If Culp's elected, Gardner said, the county's finances will be in good hands.

A choice and a voice. That's what Callahan believes she gave residents of Madison County via her unsuccessful bid for auditor.

She doesn't have high hopes for her opponent, believing the county would go bankrupt without her leadership.

"I gave the people a choice and their choice says, 'We don't need your voice,' and I will respect that," she said.

Callahan was inspired by her 18- and 21-year-old daughters who encouraged her to run, saying it was the best way she could effect change in Madison County.

Knowing their mother expresses her activism via social media, they gave her the following ultimatum: Run for office or put up your keyboard.

"So, I ran," Callahan said.
