CT man charged in shooting following altercation with his brother

A man was arrested on assault and firearm charges in connection with a shooting that occurred following an altercation with his brother in West Haven earlier this week.

Adam Keit, 31, was taken into custody after authorities found the gun they believe was used in a shooting that was reported Tuesday at an apartment on Coleman Street, according to the West Haven Police Department.

Officers responded to the apartment just after 9:30 p.m. on the report of someone being shot inside the unit. Police said in a statement that officers arrived and found evidence indicating someone was “significantly injured.”

Police spoke to an elderly woman who said the shooting victim and his brother were involved in an altercation before she heard a gunshot. She said both men then left the apartment, according to police.

Minutes after receiving the report of the shooting, investigators learned that a gunshot victim was dropped off at Yale New Haven Hospital, police said. The person who dropped the man off was seen leaving the area in a black Volkswagen, according to police.

Hospital staff found that the victim suffered a gunshot wound to his biceps and that the bullet then traveled into his chest and became lodged in his back, police said. The injury was not considered life-threatening.

Connecticut State Police troopers later spotted the black Volkswagen on Interstate 95 South where it continued into Stratford, police said. Authorities lost sight of the vehicle briefly before Stratford Police Department officers found it and followed the driver onto a dead-end street.

Officers apprehended Keit, who was found to have two warrants out for his arrest from Bridgeport and West Haven police. The warrants were not related to the shooting, according to police.

During their investigation, West Haven detectives obtained search warrants for the Volkswagen and the apartment where the shooting took place.

In the vehicle, they found a Glock .357 caliber handgun believed to be used in the shooting, police said. Inside the apartment, authorities reported finding an assault rifle and numerous rounds of ammunition.

Keit was subsequently charged with first-degree assault, carrying a pistol without a permit, illegal possession of a weapon in a motor vehicle, illegal possession of an assault weapon, illegal possession of a large-capacity magazine, disorderly conduct and reckless endangerment.

He was held on $750,000 bond pending an arraignment hearing in Milford Superior Court.
