CSFD: Duplex fire caused by heat lamp in chicken coop

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — The Colorado Springs Fire Department (CSFD) has released the cause for a fire that happened on Sunday, March 24 that displaced those living in two duplexes.

On Sunday, CSFD fire crews were called to a house fire in the 6200 block of Armdale Heights near Dublin Boulevard and Vista del Tierra. While responding CSFD units reported a large column of smoke.

Fire crews arrived at around 12:30 p.m. and reported fire and smoke coming from two homes on Armdale Hts. A second alarm was called due to the amount of fire and smoke and at 12:54 p.m. a third alarm was called. More than 60 CSFD personnel responded to the scene.

CSFD said a gas line likely caused by the fire was feeding the flames making conditions difficult for firefighters to get the fire under control until the gas was shut off. While firefighters were inside the home, command alerted them to the possibility of a roof collapse and ordered all crews to leave the home.

The fire was deemed under control at 1:27 p.m. No injuries of those living in the area, pets, or firefighters were reported. A cat was rescued from one of the homes after the fire was under control. Six people, a cat, a dog, and several chickens were displaced from the duplexes involved, according to CSFD.

Firefighters said the investigation revealed the fire was caused by a heating lamp in a chicken coop catching combustibles on fire and spreading to the second home. No chickens were harmed in the fire, according to CSFD

“CSFD wants to remind people that if they have a chicken coop it is important to secure the heat lamp and keep it inaccessible to animals to reduce the risk of an animal bumping the lamp out of place and starting a fire,” wrote CSFD.
