Crusader send-off kicks off in Dunmore

DUNMORE, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A local high school basketball team is hoping to bring home a win for the Lackawanna County community.

The Holy Cross Boy’s Basketball Team will play Friday afternoon in Hershey for the State Championship Title.

Earlier Thursday, the school celebrated the team’s season with a fun pep rally.

“It’s fantastic to be in the spot we are in. It’s unbelievable,” said junior Matt Lyons.

“All the Parents all the fans it’s really cool and a once-in-a-lifetime experience,” said Michael Hughes, a junior student.

A pep rally was held in Dunmore at Holy Cross because the Crusaders are heading to the state championship game at Hershey’s Giant Center on Friday.

The Class Two Championship Game is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Friday against Aliquippa High School, near Pittsburgh.

“No one has seen anything like this since 2013. Everyone has been dying to get back,” Lyons said.

Parents, students, teachers, and fans filled the school’s gym.

The pep rally started with cheerleaders welcoming the players in grand fashion.

The high school team has had an impressive season with a lot of ups and a few downs.

On Tuesday, the team’s victory over Philadelphia’s Constitution High School secured their place in the title game.

“We’ve gone through a couple of tough losses, but we’ve learned from them and we’re playing our best basketball right now we just think we’ll get the job done,” said Hughes.

Thursday afternoon’s pep rally pumped everyone up, the kids are ready, and the parents are proud.

“We really appreciate the school coming together like this, the students, the teachers, the faculty, the coaches are all great,” said parent Michael Hughes.

“It’s been amazing. They show up for every game every time and play so hard,” said parent Michelle Hughes.

The pep rally concluded with a video message and blessing from Bishop Joseph Bambera.

“Finally, Lord, if it’s not too much to ask, bring home that championship and one more thing. Go Crusaders!” said Scranton Diocese Bishop Joseph Bambera.

Again, the game is Friday at 2:00 p.m. in Hershey.

Good luck, Crusaders!
